Replacing a hydraulic hose on a 2-post or 4-post automotive lift doesn't need to be complicated. While hydraulic systems in heavy industrial equipment can get complex, vehicle lifts stick to a handful of standardized sizes, working pressures, and fitting types.
Whether you are replacing a blown power unit line or routing a fresh hose through a lift column, here is everything you need to measure, spec, and source the correct replacement hydraulic hose for your shop.
1. How to Measure Hydraulic Hoses Correctly (Overall Length)
The most common mistake when ordering custom hydraulic hoses is measuring only the flexible rubber length.
Golden Rule of Hose Sizing: Hydraulic hose length is always measured end-to-end, from the tip of one fitting to the tip of the other (Overall Length / OAL).
When specifying a custom replacement line, measure from the extreme end of the metal fitting on Side A to the extreme end of the metal fitting on Side B—including any straight stems or 90-degree elbows.
2. Hose Diameters & Pressure Ratings (PSI)
Virtually every automotive lift on the market uses either 1/4" or 3/8" inside diameter (ID) hydraulic hose.
- 1/4" Hydraulic Hose: High-pressure line rated between 5,500 PSI and 6,000 PSI. Commonly used for primary power unit supply lines and overhead cylinder crossovers on standard 2-post lifts (typically 9,000 lb to 12,000 lb capacity).
- 3/8" Hydraulic Hose: High-volume flow line rated around 3,000 PSI. Used in applications requiring higher fluid volume transfer, such as heavy-duty 4-post runway lifts or dual-cylinder equalization systems where rapid fluid flow is necessary.
Since standard lift power units operate between 2,000 PSI and 2,800 PSI, both 1/4" and 3/8" hoses provide a generous safety factor for commercial shop operation.
3. The Big Three Hydraulic Fitting Styles
While there are dozens of hydraulic thread styles across global industrial machinery, automotive lifts almost exclusively use three fitting types:
A. JIC 37° Flare (Joint Industry Council)
By far the most common fitting on automotive lifts. JIC fittings use a parallel thread and a 37-degree metal-to-metal seating cone. They feature a female swivel nut on the hose end that threads onto a male JIC port adapter.
- -4 JIC (for 1/4" Hose): 7/16"-20 Thread — Wrench Size: 9/16"
- -6 JIC (for 3/8" Hose): 9/16"-18 Thread — Wrench Size: 11/16"
B. NPT / NPTF (National Pipe Tapered)
Tapered pipe threads that seal by wedging the metal threads together. NPT male fittings are fixed (non-swiveling) and require liquid thread sealant or PTFE tape to create a leak-free seal.
- 1/4" NPT (for 1/4" Hose): 1/4"-18 NPT Thread — Wrench Size: 9/16" or 5/8"
- 3/8" NPT (for 3/8" Hose): 3/8"-18 NPT Thread — Wrench Size: 11/16" or 3/4"
C. ORB (SAE O-Ring Boss)
ORB fittings use straight threads backed by a synthetic rubber O-ring located at the base of the thread. As the fitting is tightened into the cylinder or valve block, the O-ring compresses into a chamfered port cavity to form a high-pressure seal.
- -4 ORB (for 1/4" Hose): 7/16"-20 Thread with O-ring — Wrench Size: 9/16"
- -6 ORB (for 3/8" Hose): 9/16"-18 Thread with O-ring — Wrench Size: 11/16"
4. Fitting Orientations: Straight vs. 90° Elbows
Hydraulic hose ends are configured in two main orientations:
- Straight Fittings: Placed directly on the end of the hose for straight line runs inside columns or overhead crossbeams.
- 90° Elbow Fittings: Crucial when connecting hoses directly into power unit manifolds or cylinder ports inside narrow lift columns. Using a 90-degree elbow prevents the hose from exceeding its minimum bend radius, eliminating stress kinks that lead to premature outer hose wall failure.
