  • How They Work: Equalizer cables run down one column, through sheaves (pulleys) at the base or overhead crossbeam, and up to the opposing carriage. They force both carriages to rise and lower at the exact same speed.

  2. Necking / Diameter Reduction: A noticeable reduction in cable diameter indicates internal core collapse or severe internal wear.
  3. Bird-Caging or Kinking: Any unravelling, geometric distortion, or sharp kink in the wire rope permanently compromises tensile strength.
  4. Rust & Corrosion: Surface rust pitted into the strands, or dry red rust dust ("bleed") indicating internal friction breakdown.
  5. Sheave Groove Wear: Deep grooves worn into column pulleys or frozen sheaves that refuse to spin freely.
Inspection Tip: Run a shop rag loosely along the length of the cable. The cloth fibers will catch on subtle outer wire breaks that might not be obvious to the naked eye.
